  12. ADDENDUM TO MANUAL
  13. ------------------
  14.  
  15. When using the spectrum display with searches, you need to do the following:
  16.  
  17. 1. select the bank you want to use
  18. 2. open the spectrum display (by clicking on the "Spectrum..." push button)
  19. 3. start the search by clicking on the "Start" push button
  20.  
  21. The explanation in the manual is potentially misleading.
  22.  
  23.  
  24. DEMONSTRATION VERSION
  25. ---------------------
  26.  
  27. Welcome to AOR PC-MANAGER.  The demo version of PC-MANAGER for Windows 
  28. is fully working with the following two exceptions:
  29.  
  30. 1. The File|Save... and File|Save As... options are disabled
  31. 2. The program runs for 10 minute periods before exiting
  32.  
  33. To install the demonstration, you just need to unzip the distibution file
  34. (if appropriate) and run the INSTALL.EXE program.  All the distribution
  35. files will be copied into a directory on your hards disk.  Note, no files
  36. will be copied into your Windows directory and your system INI files will
  37. not be edited.  This makes removal of the demo simple.
  38.

  54. COPY PROTECTION
  55. ---------------
  56.  
  57.     AOR PC-MANAGER is copy protected using a system which places a 
  58. token on your hard disk when you install the program.  The program will 
  59. only work on the disk you installed it to.  There is no dongle or 
  60. key-disk, so once installed the program runs completely normally and you 
  61. will not be inconvenienced (unlike other schemes).  However, you cannot
  62. DISKCOPY the distrubution disk or duplicate it with COPY commands.
  63.  
  64. Specific points to remember:
  65.  
  66. 1. The distribution disk contains two tokens.  This means that you can 
  67. install up to two complete copies of the software on separate machines 
  68. at once.  You cannot transfer the program to another machine without 
  69. first moving one of the tokens back onto the original distribution disk 
  70. then re-installing.  The tokens can easily be moved with the MOVE.EXE 
  71. program that is provided.  Contact your AOR distributor if you need 
  72. additional copies of the software.
  73.  
  74. 2. You should keep your original disk in a safe place away from strong 
  75. magnetic fields, high humidity or other environmental conditions that 
  76. could damage it.  You will not be able to re-install the software or move 
  77. it to another machine without the original distribution disk.
  78.  
  79. 3. Two hidden files are copied to a hidden subdirectory of the PC-MANAGER
  80. directory (PC-MANAG.CCC and CCONTROL.SYS) when you install the software.
  81. These contain configuration information for the copy protection scheme and
  82. are normal DOS format files.  DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES UNDER ANY
  83. CIRCUMSTANCES.  If these files are deleted, AOR PC-MANAGER will not run.
  84.  
  85. 4. If you are using a backup utility, make sure that the two hidden files 
  86. are not backed up otherwise, when restored, the copy protection scheme may 
  87. not be able to validate the installation and AOR PC-MANAGER will not run.  
  88. Most backup utilities do not touch these files because they have the hidden, 
  89. system and read-only attributes set.  The two copy protection files also do 
  90. not have the archive bit set, so you should be able to exclude them from 
  91. backups by setting up your backup software to ignore files without an 
  92. archive bit.  Remember, it is not the backup but the restore that can 
  93. cause problems.

  95. 5. The /d+ option of the PC-Kwik disk cache software from Multisoft 
  96. Corporation is not compatible with the copy protection scheme and should be 
  97. temporarily disabled when installing AOR PC-MANAGER or moving the token.  
  98. HyperCache also affects the copy protection scheme in the same way because 
  99. of non-standard methods of accessing the floppy disk drive.  Again, it 
  100. should be temporarily disabled, but both caches may be used at other times.

  102. 6. The copy protection scheme is compatible with disk drives compressed with 
  103. SuperStor, Stacker and DoubleSpace.  However, you should temporarily remove 
  104. the token from the hard disk when installing one of these compression 
  105. utilities because the protection will appear invalid when the drives are 
  106. compressed.  The disk compression utilities warn you of this in their manuals.

  108. 7.  The copy protection scheme is known to be compatible with the following 
  109. disk defragmenters: Central PointÆs Compress, Digital Research's Diskopt, 
  110. Stac's Sdefrag and Microsoft's Defrag.
  111.  
  112. 8.  The copy protection scheme is not currently compatible with Windows NT.
  113.  
  114. 9.  The copy protection scheme is not compatible with non-standard floppy
  115. disk systems.  At present (7/95) this includes the following PCs:
  116.  
  117.     Evesham Vale Voyager laptop
  118.     Zeos Pentiums
  119.  
  120. 10. Some problems with deleted token have been reported using Norton Speed
  121. Disk.
  122.  
  123. It is possible to install onto a PC with a non-standard floppy disk (or no
  124. floppy disk) using a networked standard drive.  The easiest way to do this
  125. if you do not already have a network is to use the INTERLNK or INTERSVR
  126. utilities supplied with MS-DOS.
  127.  
  128. 10.  The copy protection scheme is compatible with Windows 95.  However,
  129. you can completely erase your tokens using Explorer to drag and drop the
  130. PC-MANAGER directory onto the Recycle bin.  Although the token files are
  131. not deleted, they cannot be restored to their original positions on disk.
  132. EXPLORER DOES NOT GIVE WARNINGS LIKE FILE MANAGER UNDER WINDOWS 3.X!.

  135. USING SCREEN SAVERS
  136. -------------------
  137.  
  138. Some screen savers may interfere with PC-MANAGER when they first operate.
  139. Under some circumstances a run time error can occur because of the 
  140. addition of extra system resources that these screen savers demand.  For 
  141. reliable operation over long periods, screen savers should be disabled.
  142.
